The course ‘assessment of professional competence’ at the School for Health Education at the University of Maastricht has been an informative experience for me even though being actively involved in many different assessment methods for many years.
The course is valuable for a number of different reasons: First, the notion of assessment that is adopted by Maastricht takes you beyond the classic psychometric approach and introduces you to the concept of ‘assessment for learning’ embedded in a program of assessment. Second, the course is set up in a manner that allows for a number of different learning methods (lecture, small group discussion, mentoring) that ensures an active learning experience. Third, many enthusiastic staff members are involved in teaching, which enables you to ‘taste’ different expert opinions. Last but not least, assessment is not only looked at it from a theoretical perspective but learning is grounded in the educational practice of the medical school of Maastricht University. All together makes this five days course a ‘must’ for anyone who carries conceptual responsibility in evaluating the performance of health care professionals.
